Recognizing Customer Activity with Artificial Intelligence in Modern Retail

One of the most exciting directions in retail technology is the recognition and analysis of customer activity. It allows retailers to understand their customers better and serve them more effectively.

Picture a shopper walking into a store and browsing between the shelves. AI-based solutions recognize when this shopper picks a product off the shelf, examines it, and then either puts it back or places it in the basket. This data can show which products attract the most attention, and which ones shoppers hesitate over and ultimately do not buy.

It can also reveal the behavioral patterns behind purchasing decisions, for example which products or brands are preferred at certain times or during certain events. This information can be worth its weight in gold. Retailers can use it to optimize shelf layout, inventory management and promotions, improving the customer experience and increasing sales.

In our project „Development of a GDPR-compliant, anonymous face recognition based analytics and asset protection solution”, we are developing algorithms that make it possible to analyze this kind of activity and present the results clearly. The illustration below shows the algorithm developed by Vitarex in action.

In summary, recognizing and analyzing customer activity is revolutionizing in-store shopping. Understanding customer behavior at this depth is not only a competitive advantage, it also gives us the chance to meet customers’ needs even more precisely.
